The Jewish Heritage of Shanghai

Explore the Jewish History of Shanghai

Shanghai has a long Jewish history shaped by three waves of arrivals, from Middle Eastern business tycoons to refugees fleeing Nazi Europe. Shanghai was one of the few places that admitted Jewish refugees without visas, many settling in the Hongkou District. They established synagogues, schools, and active community institutions.

Today, visitors can explore this heritage through guided tours and visiting sites such as the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum and preserved neighborhood landmarks.

Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum

The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum was established in 2007 with the Ohel Moshe Synagogue as its core body. The museum tells the history of European Jewish refugees who came to Shanghai in the 1930s and 1940s to escape Nazi persecution, and shared woes with the Chinese people.
